The strengthening of the Ottoman Empire, especially in the 15th century starting with Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror, ensured the support and development of the arts. Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror's interest in art and science from the time he was a prince led him to transfer his library from Manisa Palace to Edirne Palace, and then to Topkapı Palace, where he established a palace embroidery house. Baba Nakkaş Efendi was appointed as the head master of this embroidery house. At the time, this embroidery house served as a kind of Academy of Fine Arts.
The style developed by the Nakışhane in terms of tile patterns was defined as Baba Nakkaş Style. This style was applied in blue and white on evani ware made in Istanbul, and a very dark cobalt color was used as the blue color. The intensity of the patterns is exhibited with meticulous workmanship with the participation of Rumi and Hatayi motifs.
Especially in the inner parts of the Rumi motifs, cobalt colored paints were diluted to achieve a relief effect.
Today, a renewed interest in Ottoman heritage has sparked efforts to restore Iznik çini to their former glory by Turkish artists.
